a system taking care of person's dull everyday formalities like bills, receipts, bureaucracy. not bad.
your own personal secretary who knows your calendar and whom you can put the do the errands like book a dentist etc.
Isn't this the normal direction of evolution, to get rid of dull routine? Sometimes it works, like you buy your bread and cheese ready sliced. Addition is done by computers, potatoes grown by someone else. But you have to recycle bottles and sort the garbage, type your own documents.

I.e. some tasks you can loose and some you don't. You also get new tasks. It's easier to acquire knowledge via web but then on the other hand, somebody feel compelled to write wikipedia.

Distantly, this relates to a book I read( was it Utterback can't remember). There was an example of cereal-growing in America, how it got more effective during centuries. At a given time the crop increased threefold. But at the same time, the energy needed got tenfold. Efficiency getting worse was the price for more centralized production serving a changed society structure.

Remote eyes (2)

in harrypotter, there is an invention by innovative Weasley brothers, called extendable ears. On the same lines, how about extendable eyes, or maybe remote eyes would be a better term. There come situations where you would like to know or actually see, how many people there on the town square, how much the product costs in another store, or whether there is an empty parking slot just around the corner.

At that instant you could summon people who see what you would like to see, via cameraphone etc.
What you need is a mobile app where you could order a location based photo, live. Photo is taken by a passer-by, not familiar to you. Of course there is the question of payment. Someone could do it for free, some other would require some kind of reward.

specifically the point number six: our digital twins or assistants take care and automate dull errands like paying bills or route planning.

also interestingly at the same it was announced that RIM acquired the Swedish TAT with lots of interesting ideas about user interfaces, also augmented reality stuff.

physical browsing

I realized I have adopted a new way to search information on internet. If i need opening hours for a shop, I don't try to google the name of the shop on that particular street whose name I don't know. Instead I fire up google maps and fly to the shop's location. then check the opening hours by looking at the sign in streetview. Realizing that the picture could be one year old. Also when planning where to park, streetview is a good place to check the traffic signs beforehand. Ok, just call me control freak.

Needless to say, I find this way of browsing very natural. At least it works with local information, I wouldn't search paddington metro station info number via streetview browsing.

This physical browsing bears a close relationship to augmented reality, I find very intriguing the idea to be able to remotely peek around the corner to the next street while walking in city centre. Or take a bird eye view on the neighbourhood.

liittyen mitä kirjoitin taannoin, videoiden lisäys ge:ssä on toiminut lokakuusta lähtien. eli infra virtuaalisten kaupunkiopastusten tekemiseen on olemassa, nyt kysytään vain sisällöntuottamista.
hgin keskustassakin on vielä monta korttelia ja kadunkulmaa, josta ei videota ole tarjolla. vähän aikaa menee, niin videoita on niin paljon, ettei mahdu kerralla kartalle vaan joutuu porrastamaan ajan mukaan/hakusanoilla.

related to what i was saying the other day, adding videos to google earth has been possible since last October. so the infrastructure of virtual cityguides is there, what is needed is context. e.g. in downtown Helsinki there are a lot of blocks and street corners without a single video. soon there are so many videos you can't put them all in the map but must restrict the timespan/relevance.

hmm. slashdotissa oli että wiimote tekee tv:stä samanlaisen käyttöliittymän kuin mssurface. unbelievable, että sillä on tommoinen vakiintunut nimikin. kun ms julkaisi sen mööpelin viime vuonna, ajattelin, etteikö melkein sadalla tuhannella työntekijällä saa parempaa hökötystä aikaan. pari tekniikan opiskelijaa olis tehny saman. pöhötauti vaivaa. kuvaavaa on, että kun nyt yritin tutustua aiheeseen mssurfacen sivuilla, ne eivät muuta tehneet kuin jumittivat ja bufferoivat.

tänään oli engadgetissa, että nokia on patentoinut kanssa tavallaan eleisiin perustuvan käyttöliittymän. kuvaat kännykameralla sormiasi ja känny luo näytölleen kuvan sormistasi ja virtuaalinäppäimistöstä. noksu-ms 6-0.

kuvittele, olet vieraassa kaupungissa ja olet kävelemässä hotellilta jollekin nähtävyydelle/shoppaamaan. Mitäpä jos voisit ladata kännyyn/luureihin jonkun tallettaman kaupunkikierros-selostuksen? Taannoin puhuin ystävistäni, jotka kierrättävät turismoja hyvää hyvyyttään. Samoin joku voisi muuten vaan kävellessään sanella kaupunkitietämyksensä nauhalle synkattuna gps-sijainteihin. Näin selostukset alkaisivat oikeissa kohdissa..."käänny tästä oikealle ja nyt vasemmalla näet..". Luonnollisesti opaskierrokset olisivat tägitetty painotusten mukaan, kulttuuri, baarit, julkimot,..

picture yourself walking in a foreign city, e.g. from your hotel to a certain sight. Whatif you could download a pre-recorded audible city tour to your handset? Sometime ago I was telling about friends oh mine who take tourists to free city tours. they could as well record these tours and tag them to gps locations. thus the recordings would start at the right time and simulate a person walking with you. the recorded tours could be tagged according to the style/interest group.

UCLA:n Gerla & Pau ovat jo vuosien ajan tutkineet opportunistisia ad-hoc verkkoja autoissa, törmäsin koko aihepiiriin vasta nyt digitodayn jutun kautta. aiheestahan järjestetään jopa konferensseja. miten autot juttelisivat langattomasti keskenään ja vaihtaisivat tietoja (keli, liikennetilanne, tiedot matkakohteista..). ei huono. selatessa heidän esityksiä taaksepäin näkee nopean kehityksen ja fokuksen tarkentumisen. vanhoissa jutuissa puhuttiin, että torrenttia käytettäisiin välittämään kiinteistä accesspointeista ladatun (kalliin/hitaan) datan välittämiseen autojen välillä. uudemmissa jutuissa painotetaan enemmän autoissa itse luodun sisällön (tien kunto, kamerakuvat..) välittämiseen. erittäin mielenkiintoista. yksi esimerkki oli, että autoihin talletettaisiin paikallisesti forensic-dataa, jota poliisit voisivat käyttää tarvittaessa onnettomuuksien selvittämiseen. toisaalta autot(nää ei ollut kaikki gerla & paun esityksissä) voisivat lähettää ympäristöön (toisille autoille) tietoja (massa, vauhti, kiihtyvyys, kitkakerroin..) joita muut voivat hyödyntää ennakoinnissa.

Gerla & Pau (UCLA) have studied already for years opportunistic ad-hoc networks on cars, just found this fact from another blog. they even have conferences on these issues. how cars would communicate wirelessly and exchange information about weather/road conditions, traffic, tourist attractions..not bad, not bad at all. when one browses their presentations, one can see the development and focussing over time. in older presentations the focus is on relaying data downloaded from internet access points (slow, expensive), whereas in newer presentations the emphasis is on self-generated information (road condition, pictures..). one example was that forensic data would be archived locally to the cars. and that data could be used by the police to investigate accidents. additionally (these were not from the G&P presentation), cars could broadcast their weight, speed, acceleration etc. to other cars, which could then use this info to estimate the traffic situation.

enkö vielä ehtinyt kirjoittaa tästä? harrypottereissa on kuvailtu etäkorvat, innovatiivisten weasleyn veljesten tekosia. niitä mukaellen, miten olis etäsilmät? tulee tilanteita, jolloin olisi mukava nähdä, paljonko porukkaa on ostarilla, mitä tuote maksaa toisessa kaupassa, onko kulman takana parkkipaikkaa..

tällöin voisivat astua avuksi henkilöt, jotka jo sattuvat olemaan paikan päällä kännykameroineen.
tarvittaisiin mobiilisovellutus, josta voisi tilata nettikuvan haluamastaan paikasta, livenä. kysymyksenä on tietysti maksupuoli...ehkä joku tekisi tuon palveluksena samaan tyyliin kuin kadulla tai keskustelupalstalla kysytään neuvoa. joku ehkä tarvisi enemmän krediittejä.

täähän on normaali kehityssuunta, pyritään eroon tylsistä rutiinihommista.
jossain se onnistuu, juusto ja leivät ovat nykyään valmiiksi viipaloituja,
yhteenlaskun hoitaa koneet, perunat kasvattaa joku muu. mutta pullot ja roskat joutuu itse kierrättämään ja lajittelemaan, dokumentit kirjoittamaan itse puhtaaksi wordillä.

eli joistain hommista pääsee eroon, toisia tulee tilalle. webin myötä tiedonhaku helpottuu, mutta toisaalta sitten ihmiset vääntää vapaaehtoisesti kaikenmaailman wikipedioita.

etäisesti tähän liittyen kirjassa (jonka nimeä en jaksa muistaa, utterback?) oli esimerkki ameriikan viljanviljelystä, miten se on tehostunut vuosisatojen kuluessa. luvut oli joltain ajalta, että sato oli kolminkertaistunut, mutta sadon tuottamiseen tarvittu energia (lannoitteet, polttoaineet ym) oli kymmenkertaistunut. mikä on se hinta joka tehokkaammasta keskitetymmästä toiminnasta joudutaan maksamaan, hyötysuhde huononee.

aa, nyt vasta tajusin mitä ideaa noksun esittelemissä augment reality jutuissa kännyn näytöllä. niissä ei ole immersiota keinotodllisuuteen, vaan keinotodelisuuteen ainoastaan 'kurkistetaan' ikkunan/peilin kautta. näppärää.

it took me this long to figure out the clue in the nokias mobile augmented reality concept. it doesn't matter even if you don't get immersed to the virtual world. the tiny screen of the mobile phone works as a window through which you peek to the other world. cute.

Ja sitten mieliaiheeseeni eli virtuaalitodellisuuteen. Näet kaupungilla liikkuessasi mielenkiintoisen henkilön ja mietit, mikähän hänenkin tarinansa on. Mitä jos voisit on-the-fly katsoa kännykässä/videolaseissasi hänen itsensä laatiman kollaasin/synopsiksen, joka vastaisi kysymykseen.

Tai näet jonkun nukkuvan metroasemalla ja mietit, onkohan kaikki ok vai pitäiskö huolestua. Mitä jos voisit on-the-spot pikakelata taaksepäin esim. ympäröivien valvontakameroiden kuvia tarkistaaksesi, mitä aikaisemmin oli tapahtunut. Oliko henkilö mahdollisti kaatunut ja pökertynyt.
Vähän niinkuin ajansiirto digibokseissa. 5-10 vuoden päästä emme tajua, miten tulimme ennen ilman sitä toimeen. (minä haluaisin joskus pikakelata omia jälkiäni taaksepäin nähdäkseni, mihin jätin avaimet etc.).

Back to virtual reality, my favourite subject. You see an interesting person in the city centre and are wondering what is his/her story. Whatif you could there on-the-fly check a synopsis (via mobile phone/video glasses) made by her to answer that question.

Or you see someone sleeping in the metro station and are wondering if he is ok or fainted or something. Whatif you could check the surveillance camera videos right there on the spot to see whether something nasty has happened to him.
It's similar to the time shift functionality in the digital recording apparatus. in 5 to 10 years we can't comprehend how we survived without those in the past. (I could use that kind of a fast rewind sometimes to find out where I left my keys etc.).
